Review

Some parts of this memoir rank with the funniest things I’ve ever read. (The chapter “Late Bloomer” is one of them: it almost demands to be read out loud, so you can choke yourself up on every other line.) Others, maybe not so much: there’s an overlong and fairly tedious encounter with the Amsterdam drug culture that might have been easier to deal with had it been sliced in two and then both slices discarded. Still, if you need laughs, you can do worse than Woman Who Cringes A Lot, and Una LaMarche is perfectly willing to share those cringes with you, so it’s a win/win deal all around. What’s more, a section from the “Gratuitous Foodery” chapter has been turned into a YouTube video, which captures most of the LaMarchean Zeitgeist, though it inexplicably omits the term “turd yurt,” the sight of which caused me to put down the book for a couple of minutes lest I foul it with facial exudations. Also video’d: a section from “Death Becomes Me” in which self-defense weapons are improvised. If you laughed at either of these, you’ll have conniptions reading the actual book.
