Incisive history of how the big names in couture were eclipsed by the big names wearing the couture, and how celebrity labels became as well-known as designer labels. The author spent a quarter-century on the fashion beat at The Wall Street Journal, so she knows not only where the bodies are buried but who left them there in the first place. The tone is conversational, even gossipy, and the reading is brisk and breezy, which rhymes with Yeezy, who gets a whole chapter about his attempts to become not just Kanye West, King of the Universe, but Kanye West, Fashion God. (Hint: He was less successful than he’d hoped.) Watchers both of runways and of red carpets will find much to enjoy.
