Review

Perfection, we are told, is denied us mere mortals. But if the bar seems too high for us, we are not excused from the attempts to clear it, and Sarah Gorham here has done a wonderful job of explaining how we fall short, and why it may be desirable — even necessary — to do so. The book alternates between archetypes, two pages at most, and longer essays from seemingly every aspect of life. I was struck most forcefully by “The Drinker’s Guide to The Cat in the Hat,” located at the scary intersection of life, love and liquid; but every piece here is worth reading and savoring.
