Genuinely twisted tales by a man who knew how to tell them, but began to wonder if maybe he shouldn’t, followed by a brief sampling of the sort of everyday newspaper material you’d expect from a man who would rather be telling genuinely twisted tales. At some point, it occurred to me that Paul Gleeson was a spiritual descendant of Rod Serling — had Serling been spending his odd hours listening to Mike Royko. In 1980, Mr Gleeson put down his pen and swore he’d never take it up again; I am grateful to his family for rescuing these stories, only three of which have been published previously in any form. Open it up to “One Bet Too Many,” have a Heineken, and enjoy.
