Review

Natalie Whipple’s sequel to Transparent is so good enough you have to wonder why her British publisher picked it up and her American publisher didn’t. Fiona McClean is still invisible, and the various crime syndicates that control the nation in this dystopia — plus the US Army, which occasionally acts like a syndicate itself — are zeroing on the little desert town where she, her mother, and her two brothers have been hiding. They don’t want her, particularly; they want what she knows about the mysterious chemical that rearranges one’s genes. To complicate matters, she’s drawing closer to the one guy who seems to be able to see her. It’s great fun and only barely predictable.
