Perhaps needless to say, it is illegal to go over Niagara Falls, either the American or Canadian sides, in a barrel or any other similar conveyance. Just the same, many people have tried. The Age of Daredevils focuses on the William (Red) Hill family, on the Canadian side, who were involved in several of those attempts. either as participants or as rescuers. They might have been content as rescuers until about 1901, when a Michigan schoolteacher named Annie Edson Taylor survived a trip over the Falls but was unable to capitalize on her achievement. Still, the fact that someone did it made doing it again look almost sensible. Michael Clarkson, an acquaintance of the Hills who had reported on many of these incidents over the years, pulls off the difficult task of making the individual jumps fascinating without in any way making it look like a swell idea to try it yourself.
