Review

Megan Mayhew Bergman gives away the game in the title: Almost Famous Women were real enough, and were largely forgotten by future generations, a situation she intends to resolve in their favor by giving them stories that are possible and, more important, believable. It’s a success from start to finish, from the Hilton twins to the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, though perhaps the most compelling story she creates tells of Allegra, the illegitimate daughter spurned by Lord Byron. It’s fiction, as she takes pain to remind us, but it’s fiction that’s scrupulously researched and brilliantly imagined.
