Review

Seriously scholarly history of slang, argot, cant, and all the other variations on colloquial styles of speech, beginning with early English lower-caste terms and opening up into a veritable river of slang, fed by tributaries from America, from black Americans, from Australia, from homosexuals, and from the front lines of war. There is, of course, the risk of being distracted by a single word you might not have been expected, but this is a chance worth taking: Green’s History is written with considerable verve (not the jazz term you may have thought) and more than enough historical detail.
