Review

The premise is simple enough. John Brockman, publisher of Edge.org, put out a simple question: “What scientific idea is ready for retirement?” He got over 150 responses, every last one of them at least reasonably well thought out, and several of them in direct conflict with one another. I find this heartening in a way: there’s still lots of room for disagreement in a culture that is constantly whining about “consensus” and other chimeras. Picking a “best” argument is of course impossible, but the one I found most congenial was David Berreby’s rejection of the popular notion that “people are sheep.” You might want to browse this book slowly: there’s an awful lot going on.
