Review

For this collection, Edge.org publisher John Brockman asked scores of Recognized Big Thinkers: “What is your favorite deep, elegant, or beautiful explanation?” There are inevitably a few duplicates — Darwin’s natural-selection idea came up several times — but if you’ve heard of every last one of these, you’re far wiser than I (or you’re John Brockman). Most of the “explanations” run three pages or less, and you can jump in at any point without feeling as though you’ve missed anything. The jacket blurb — “…will revolutionize your understanding of the world” — might even be true.
