Fashion over the years transmuted from careful handwork to full-fledged industry, and these days no individual designer can properly be understood without a map. Fortunately, Gioia DiLiberto is an able cartographer, and this story of an up-again-down-again fashion legend stints on none of the details and leaves out none of the background. Anyone who’s ever appreciated the classic DVF wrap dress should be delighted with this tale of how it came to be, and how a “frizzy-haired, gap-toothed” outsider (albeit with great legs) made her way to brand-name status by dint of sheer hard work.
