Review

If all you knew were the incidents of Dave Bry’s life, you’d shrug at what is basically Just Another Memoir. But Bry, by reformatting these stories into apologies to the person(s) wronged during those incidents, has made something wonderful out of them, by showing that it is (sometimes) possible to learn from one’s mistakes, that every moment is — gawd, I hate this phrase — a “teachable moment,” that seemingly ordinary lives carry the stuff of art, even of legend. Few coming-of-age stories come close to this accomplishment; it makes me wish that Bry and David Sedaris were having dinner and that I got to eavesdrop on the conversation.
