You might think that everything that’s possible to write about the Beatles has already been written. Not so. This tale of the Fab Four is told entirely from the viewpoint of actual Beatles fans, set against the background of music and world history, and it is refreshingly non-technical: no chapters on how these two tracks were bounced to a second machine and mixed with two others, or any of the other stuff that 90-plus percent of the fans never knew and probably wouldn’t have cared about if they did. While I do care about stuff like that, sometimes what I want is simply to swim around in the Zeitgeist, and Beatleness makes for a great diving board, even if it is inevitably geared toward navel-gazing Baby Boomers.
