Review

A lovely and occasionally poetic story of a summer romance between a middle-class college boy and a wealthy dropout — and the city in which they both live, limned so carefully it counts as a third character. As summer romances will, it ended, and he pursued his future in New York, only to return to Tulsa when he hears that she’s been injured in a motorcycle accident. This easily could have been one of those Manic Pixie Dream Girl stories, except that this girl is neither manic nor pixie-ish: she’s down to earth, despite her wealth, and she’s arguably more disciplined than he is. And the Tulsa settings are pivotal: this story could not have worked in Tucson or Trenton. The question of which is greater, his love for the young lady or his love for his hometown, is left as an exercise for the student.
