The Arizona Rifleman, as a public service to hoplophobes everywhere, has reproduced this handy guide to so-called “assault” weapons:

haplophobe? Okay, you got me. Word I don’t know. (I know what “haplotype” is but I don’t think knowing the root is “half” or “single” is helping here)

It was in fact a typo: the word intended, but which did not manage to emerge from the fingers, was “hoplophobes.”

Still had to look that one up but at least it’s in the online dictionaries.
So, a haplophobe would be someone who’s afraid of being single? Or afraid of halves?
