Ford out of your future

News Item: As of Thursday, the arena’s name has changed to Oklahoma City Arena. The naming rights deal with Oklahoma Ford Dealers has run out. The Thunder is in discussions with others who might like an NBA arena named for them. Until a new deal is done, the arena will carry the rather generic temporary title.

Top Ten rejected names for The Arena Formerly Known As The Ford Center:

  1. Lincoln-Mercury Center
  2. Del Rancho Arena Supreme

So how do you think that will play into people’s memories of going to concerts and ballgames and whatnot? Not having a solid name to call the arena for decades?

Frankly, when I lived in St. Louis, I was always one or two names behind on the hockey arena. I still think of it as the Savvis Center because that’s what it was called for most of the hockey games I attended.

Fortunately, here in Springfield, everything is just named Hammonds. Or it will be till the old man passes.

I’ll have to ask some Bostonians how they’ve dealt with the Shawmut Center/Fleet Center/TD Banknorth Garden/TD Garden over the past fifteen years.

I’m betting at this point that the ex-Ford will be renamed for MidFirst Bank, the largest bank in town, simply because up the turnpike in Tulsa, the BOk Center is named for the largest bank in town. Supporting this premise: MidFirst is a heavy corporate sponsor of the Thunder; there’s a rally today at MidFirst’s 57th and Western facility.

Really? A top ten list without “The Thunder Dome”??

Since we need a fill-in name, and it’s not being used at the moment … how about “The Myriad”.

    “The Myriad Garden” even.

I was trying to get beyond “Thunderdome.” And besides, it was too obvious, even for me.
