The other other white meat

Dr. Weevil happens upon an observation by Galen:

“When people unwittingly eat human flesh, served by unscrupulous restaurant owners and other such people, the similarity to pork is often noted.”

I’m relieved it was Galen who said that, and not some (say) New York Times restaurant critic…

    Wow! Talk about synchronicity!
I am reading Caleb Carr’s Alienist, and there in Chapter 28 a scientist at Museum of Natural History talks about mutilating rituals of Sioux Indians. Of misconceptions that whites had about them (in 1880’s) and of misconceptions that Sioux had about white men’ customs.
In particular, he brings up a story that Sioux for a long time had only one memorable encounter with whites: Donner party of settlers in 1847 “got trapped for months w/o access to food in a snowbound mountain pass – and some of them ate each other. [...] And then there are miscommunications that that back up those original impressions. When Sioux leader Sitting Bull was dining with some white men …he was served pork – which he, never having seen such meat, but having heard the story of the Donner party, immediately assumed was white human flesh.”
